What is Breast Lift Surgery?

At the Minor Surgery Clinic, a Breast Lift or Breast Uplift—also known as Mastopexy—is a cosmetic procedure designed to lift, reshape, and firm breasts that have sagged below their natural or desired position. This condition can result from factors such as ageing, pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, or genetics, often leading to a loss of volume, shape, and skin elasticity. A breast lift removes excess skin, tightens the surrounding tissue, and repositions the nipples to create a more youthful, uplifted, and naturally contoured breast appearance.

While many patients choose this surgery for aesthetic reasons, a breast lift can also help alleviate physical discomfort caused by sagging, improve posture, and enhance overall body proportions—ultimately boosting self-confidence and comfort in clothing. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia as a day-case surgery and typically takes around two hours. Incisions are usually made around the areola, down to the breast crease, and sometimes along the fold, depending on the degree of lift required. Care is taken to maintain nipple sensation and adequate blood supply throughout.

Recovery is straightforward for most patients. Light activity is encouraged from the day after surgery, and showering is usually allowed after one week. A supportive sports bra should be worn day and night for three weeks to support healing and maintain results. Most people can return to work within one to two weeks, and full recovery is generally expected within six to eight weeks. To be considered for a breast lift at the Minor Surgery Clinic, you must be over 18, in good general health, and have realistic expectations about the outcome.

What is the process?

At the Minor Surgery Clinic, breast lift surgery typically takes 2 hours and is performed under local anaesthesia, allowing you to remain completely pain-free throughout the procedure for maximum comfort and safety. The primary aim of a breast lift—also known as mastopexy—is to elevate and reshape the breasts, restoring a more youthful contour and improving both aesthetics and physical comfort. Several surgical techniques are available, and your surgeon will tailor the approach to your unique anatomy, goals, and lifestyle. Incisions are usually made around the areola, depending on the level of correction needed. Through these carefully placed incisions, the surgeon removes excess skin, lifts and reshapes the underlying breast tissue, and repositions the nipples to a more natural, elevated position. A critical aspect of the procedure is preserving the blood supply and nerve connections to the nipples and breast tissue, ensuring they remain functional and sensitive after surgery. If you’re planning to breastfeed in the future, this should be discussed during your consultation. Our surgical team will do their best to preserve the milk ducts and nerve pathways to support breastfeeding post-recovery. At the Minor Surgery Clinic, your comfort, safety, and satisfaction are our top priorities. Every step of the procedure is carefully planned and executed to achieve natural-looking, long-lasting results tailored to your body and lifestyle.

What are the risks?

Regardless of how minor a surgical procedure is, there is a potential for complications. It is important that you understand these before proceeding with surgery.
  • Scarring
  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Changes in nipple or breast sensation
  • Difficulty or inability to breastfeed
  • Asymmetry
  • Delayed wound healing
  • Unsatisfactory cosmetic outcome
  • Fat necrosis
  • Persistent pain, tightness, or discomfort in the breasts

What is the aftercare process?

Post-Surgery Pain: Mild pain, tightness, and discomfort in the chest area are common during the first few days after a breast lift. Your surgical team will prescribe pain relief to keep you comfortable during this early stage.

Movement and Bathing: Most patients can begin gentle movement within 24 hours and are typically able to shower or bathe normally after about three days.

Support Garment: You’ll be advised to wear a specialised post-surgical bra or supportive sports bra continuously—day and night—for up to eight weeks to minimise swelling and help maintain your new breast shape.

First Follow-Up: About one week after surgery, you’ll have a check-up with our nursing team to assess healing, manage wound care, and remove any sutures if needed. Sutures are usually removed after 7–10 days. You’ll also receive personalised advice and support.

Ongoing Support: Even after your scheduled follow-ups, our dedicated nursing team remains available for continued guidance and to answer any questions throughout your recovery.

Clinic Commitment: From your first consultation to full recovery, the Minor Surgery Clinic is committed to providing expert care and support to ensure a smooth healing process and the best possible outcome.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about Breast Lift surgery
What is breast lift surgery?
A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure that raises and reshapes sagging breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue, restoring a firmer, more youthful breast contour.
Who is a good candidate for a breast lift?
Ideal candidates are women with breasts that have lost firmness or sag due to aging, pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss, or genetics. Candidates should be in good general health and have realistic expectations.
Will the surgery affect my ability to breastfeed?
Most breast lift techniques preserve the blood supply and milk ducts, allowing for future breastfeeding. However, it’s important to discuss this with your surgeon during consultation.
Does the NHS cover breast lift surgery?
Breast lift surgery is usually considered a cosmetic procedure and is rarely covered by the NHS unless there is a clear medical need, such as severe physical discomfort or reconstructive purposes. Eligibility criteria vary by region, so it’s best to consult your GP for advice.
Will there be scars?
Yes, breast lift surgery involves incisions that result in scars, usually around the areola. Scars fade over time and can be minimized with proper care.
What type of anesthesia is used?
Breast lift surgery is performed under local anaesthesia, so you will be pain-free during the procedure.
