What is Skin Tag/Polyp Removal Surgery?

Skin tags are non-cancerous growths that dangle from the skin. They resemble a small piece of soft tissue that hangs and can be either clear or pigmented. These growths are often located on the neck and face, as well as in skin folds like the armpits and groin. Although they are not harmful, skin tags can often lead to itching, irritation, and bleeding, particularly when they get caught on clothing, glasses, or jewellery. Furthermore, they may be considered cosmetically undesirable. It is important to bear in mind that any sudden eruption of multiple skin tags could be a sign of diabetes, and therefore a visit to your doctor is advised.

The Minor Surgery Clinic offers skin tag removal, which can be done for either medical or cosmetic purposes. This procedure is straightforward, minimally invasive, and performed under local anaesthesia.

At the Minor Surgery Clinic, our experienced skin specialist surgeons handle the removal of skin tags, ensuring safe treatment and comprehensive aftercare for both aesthetic and medical needs.

What is the process?

The removal of skin tags at the Minor Surgery Clinic is carried out using a method known as shave excision in conjunction with cauterisation. Initially, the area surrounding the skin tag is numbed with a local anaesthetic to ensure your comfort and painlessness during the procedure. Following this, a special blade is employed to carefully shave the skin tag off at the level of the skin. Once the skin tag has been removed, the treatment area is cauterised to prevent any bleeding and to facilitate healing. A black scab will develop over the site and generally detaches within 7 to 10 days. After the scab falls off, the skin beneath will slowly heal and the scar fades away over time. Although a small pink mark may be visible initially, it typically lessens and becomes less prominent as the skin continues to recover. This minimally invasive approach provides a swift and effective solution for skin tags removal with minimal scarring when executed by skilled professionals.

What are the risks?

Regardless of how minor a surgical procedure is, there is a potential for complications. It is important that you understand these before proceeding with surgery.
  • Bleeding and bruising
  • Infection
  • Scarring
  • Changes in skin sensation
  • Recurrence
  • Allergic reactions
  • Misdiagnosis risk

What is the aftercare process?

Discharge: You will be allowed home shortly after the surgery.

Healing Time: Recovery after tags removal depends on factors like your age, the depth, and your wound care.

Wound Care: Keep the area clean and protected to reduce infection risk and promote healing. Avoid sun exposure, as UV rays can darken the scar.

Water Exposure: Wait at least 48 hours before getting the area wet. Follow your doctor’s instructions on cleaning and dressing the wound.

Movement and Tension: Avoid stretching the skin near the site, especially in high-movement areas, as this can widen the scar.

Pain and Tenderness: Mild tenderness is expected for a few days.

Bandaging: Keep the wound covered for the first 24–48 hours. After that, gently clean the area and apply any prescribed treatments.

Warning Signs: Look out for increased redness, swelling, warmth, or unusual discharge. Contact your doctor promptly if any of these occur or if you have concerns.

How much does Skin Tag/Polyp Removal Cost?
