Why people have skin tags removed

Skin tags are small, soft, non-cancerous growths that hang from the skin. They can be clear or pigmented, and usually turn up on the neck, face, armpits and groin. People come to us because:

They catch on clothing, glasses or jewellery
They itch, get irritated or bleed when snagged
They are on your neck or face and you would rather they were not
You have several and want them dealt with in one visit

The method is shave removal: the area is numbed, each tag is shaved off level with the skin, and the site is cauterised to stop bleeding and help it heal.

Good to know

Skin tags are not harmful. Removal is for comfort or appearance.
A sudden crop of new skin tags can be a sign of diabetes, so it is worth seeing your GP.
They can come back. New tags can form over time, in the same place or somewhere else.
The NHS generally does not remove skin tags.

A dark scab forms and usually falls off within 7 to 10 days. A small pink mark is left at first, which usually fades as the skin settles.

However minor the procedure, complications are possible, and you should understand them before you go ahead. Dr Ouali will go through them with you at your consultation.

Expect mild tenderness for a few days. Keep the wound covered for 24 to 48 hours, keep it dry for 48 hours, and keep it out of the sun. The recognised risks are:

Is the video consultation really free?

Yes. The video consultation is with Dr Ouali himself, it is free, and there is no obligation. If you would rather be seen in person before you decide, a face-to-face appointment can be arranged, and that one is charged separately.

Can the NHS remove skin tags for free?

Generally, no.

Is skin tag removal painful?

The procedure itself is usually painless because it is done under local anaesthetic, though you may feel some pressure. There may be mild tenderness once the anaesthetic wears off, which over-the-counter painkillers usually deal with.

How long does it take?

Usually 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the size, number and position of the tags. You go home the same day.

Can skin tags grow back?

Yes. They can come back over time, or new ones can form somewhere else.

Will there be a scar?

There will be a small mark at first, which usually fades over time. Looking after the wound properly helps keep scarring to a minimum.

How do I look after the wound?

Keep it clean and dry for two days. After that, wash the area and apply Vaseline until the scab falls off and the skin softens. Contact the clinic if you notice increasing redness, swelling, warmth or unusual discharge.

How do I pay if I go ahead?

You pay a 50% deposit to hold your date, or the full amount if you would rather settle it in one go. There is no in-house finance.
