What is Warts & Seborrhoeic Keratosis Removal Surgery?

A seborrhoeic keratosis, also known as a seborrhoeic wart, is a very prevalent skin lesion. These lesions typically feature a flat, wart-like surface and often appear to be adhered to the skin.

Initially, they are skin-coloured and not easily noticeable, but over time, they become increasingly visible and darker. They may also become symptomatic, leading to itchiness, bleeding if they are caught, and scabbing. Additionally, they can be cosmetically unappealing.

The removal of warts and seborrhoeic keratosis, offered at the Minor Surgery Clinic, can be performed for either symptomatic or aesthetic reasons. The procedure is simple, minimally invasive, and conducted under local anaesthesia.

At the Minor Surgery Clinic, the removal of warts and seborrhoeic keratosis is managed by our skilled skin specialist surgeons, who provide safe treatment and thorough aftercare for both cosmetic and medical requirements.

What is the process?

The removal of warts and seborrhoeic keratosis at the Minor Surgery Clinic is carried out using a method known as shave excision in conjunction with cauterisation. Initially, the area surrounding the wart is numbed with a local anaesthetic to ensure your comfort and painlessness during the procedure. Following this, a special blade is employed to carefully shave the mole off at the level of the skin—this technique is particularly advantageous as it allows for the lesion to be sent for histological examination if it appears suspicious. Once the wart has been removed, the treatment area is cauterised to prevent any bleeding and to facilitate healing. A black scab will develop over the site and generally detaches within 7 to 10 days. After the scab falls off, the skin beneath will slowly heal and the scar fades away over time. Although a small pink mark may be visible initially, it typically lessens and becomes less prominent as the skin continues to recover. This minimally invasive approach provides a swift and effective solution for wart removal with minimal scarring when executed by skilled professionals.

What are the risks?

Regardless of how minor a surgical procedure is, there is a potential for complications. It is important that you understand these before proceeding with surgery.
  • Bleeding and Bruising
  • Infection
  • Scarring
  • Changes in skin sensation
  • Recurrence
  • Allergic reaction
  • Misdiagnosis Risk

What is the aftercare process?

Discharge: You will be allowed home shortly after the surgery.

Healing Time: Recovery after warts removal depends on factors like your age, the depth, and your wound care.

Wound Care: Keep the area clean and protected to reduce infection risk and promote healing. Avoid sun exposure, as UV rays can darken the scar.

Water Exposure: Wait at least 48 hours before getting the area wet. Follow your doctor’s instructions on cleaning and dressing the wound.

Movement and Tension: Avoid stretching the skin near the site, especially in high-movement areas, as this can widen the scar.

Pain and Tenderness: Mild tenderness is expected for a few days.

Bandaging: Keep the wound covered for the first 24–48 hours. After that, gently clean the area and apply any prescribed treatments.

Warning Signs: Look out for increased redness, swelling, warmth, or unusual discharge. Contact your doctor promptly if any of these occur or if you have concerns.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about warts and seborrheic keratosis removal surgery
Warts Removal NHS: Can the NHS remove warts for free?
The NHS generally does not provide free warts removal unless there is a medical reason, such as a suspicion of skin cancer.
Is warts removal painful?
The procedure itself is usually painless, as it’s performed under local anaesthetic. You may feel some pressure during the surgery. Mild pain or tenderness can be expected after the anaesthetic wears off, but this is usually manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers.
How long does the procedure take?
Wart removal surgery typically takes between 10 and 30 minutes, depending on the size, the number of warts and the location. Patients go home the same day.
Can a wart grow back after it’s removed?
Warts can recur or grow back over time. Surgical excision is the preferred method, while shave excision might be chosen for cosmetic reasons despite the possibility of the wart returning.
Will there be a scar after warts removal?
Yes, there will be initially a small scar, but it usually fades over time. Proper aftercare can minimise scarring.
How do I care for the wound after surgery?
You’ll be advised to keep the area clean and dry for two days. After that, you will be able to wash the area and apply some Vaseline until the scab is off and the wound becomes nice and soft. If there is any sign of infection such as redness, swelling, or discharge, please contact our team.
