What is Lipoma Removal Surgery?

Lipomas are soft, fatty lumps that develop beneath the skin and are made up of adipose (fat) tissue. These non-cancerous growths can appear anywhere fat cells exist, most commonly on the neck, shoulders, arms, back, abdomen, or thighs. Typically, lipomas feel soft, rubbery, and moveable under the skin, growing slowly over time and often remaining painless. While most lipomas are harmless, some can grow larger or develop deeper in the body, occasionally pressing on nerves or surrounding tissues and causing discomfort or functional issues. In such cases, or if the lump is unsightly or changes in size or texture, removal may be recommended.

Many people opt to have lipomas removed for cosmetic reasons, to relieve discomfort, or to rule out other conditions. The removal procedure is usually performed under local anaesthetic with a simple surgical excision, and once removed, lipomas rarely return. Adults aged 40 to 60 are most commonly affected, but anyone with a confirmed lipoma causing concern may be suitable for treatment.

Private lipoma removal at Minor Surgery Clinic offers a fast, effective solution, often avoiding long NHS waiting times and helping patients regain comfort and confidence.

What is the process?

Lipoma removal at Minor Surgery Clinic is a straightforward surgical procedure designed to safely excise fatty lumps from beneath the skin. It is typically performed as an outpatient treatment, meaning patients can go home the same day. In most cases, local anaesthetic is used to numb the area around the lipoma. This allows the patient to remain awake and comfortable throughout the procedure without feeling any pain. Once the anaesthetic has taken effect, the surgeon makes a small incision over the lump and carefully removes the lipoma in its entirety. The goal is to excise not just the fatty tissue but also the surrounding capsule to reduce the chance of recurrence. After the lipoma is removed, the incision is closed using  surgical sutures. A sterile dressing or bandage is then applied to protect the wound and help minimise the risk of infection or bleeding. The entire procedure usually takes 30 minutes or less for small lipomas. Recovery is generally quick, with most patients returning to normal activities within a few days, although strenuous exercise should be avoided until the area has fully healed.

What are the risks?

Regardless of how minor a surgical procedure is, there is a potential for complications. It is important that you understand these before proceeding with surgery.
  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Scarring
  • Recurrence
  • Nerve damage
  • Pain or discomfort
  • Allergic reaction
  • Poor wound healing
  • Swelling or bruising
  • Unsatisfactory cosmetic result

What is the aftercare process?

Discharge: You will be allowed home shortly after the surgery.

Wound Care: Carefully follow the wound care and dressing guidelines provided by your clinician to support healing and reduce the risk of infection.

Bathing: Avoid soaking the wound; stick to showers with precautions, and change dressings as directed.

Medications: Use any antibiotics or pain relief as instructed to manage discomfort and aid recovery.

Activity Restrictions: Refrain from heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, or putting pressure on the incision site until fully healed.

Warning Signs: Contact your healthcare provider if you notice increased redness, swelling, pus, fever, or pain.

Recovery Support: Get plenty of rest, eat a balanced diet, stay hydrated, avoid smoking, and attend any follow-up appointments for wound checks or stitch removal.

Follow-up: Patients typically return in 7–10 days to have their sutures removed, and proper self-care during this time is key to ensuring smooth, complication-free healing.

How much does Lipoma Removal Cost?

The cost of lipoma removal varies depending on the size and location of the swelling, and whether it is superficial or deep. The package price for lipoma removal starts from £395 which includes the surgery and removal of sutures if requested.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about lipoma removal surgery
Can I get my lipoma removed on the NHS?
Lipomas are usually only removed on the NHS if they are growing, painful, or causing other symptoms due to their location. If removed, the tissue may be sent to a lab to confirm it is a lipoma.
Why would someone have a lipoma removed?
Lipomas are usually removed if they cause discomfort, pain, restrict movement, are growing, or for cosmetic reasons. Removal is also advised if there's any concern about the nature of the lump.
Is lipoma removal painful?
The procedure is usually done under local anaesthetic, so you won’t feel pain during the surgery. Some mild soreness or discomfort may be experienced afterward, but this can typically be managed with over-the-counter pain relief.
How is a lipoma removed?
Lipoma removal involves making a small incision over the lump and surgically excising the fatty tissue. The wound is then closed with stitches or medical glue. Most procedures are quick and done on an outpatient basis.
Is there a risk of the lipoma coming back?
In most cases, once a lipoma is completely removed, it does not return. However, it is possible to develop new lipomas in other areas.
Will there be a scar after lipoma removal?
Yes, there will be a small scar where the incision was made. The size and appearance of the scar depend on the lipoma’s location, size, and your individual healing process. Over time, most scars fade significantly.
